In Canada the Calypso fits into the Advanced
Ultralight category, and is available in kit form or ready to fly. In
kit form the fuselage comes as one piece and the wings are built.
The builder has to attach the landing gear,
ailerons, flaps, and install the engine, wiring, instruments, and
bond the tail services. This should take about 500 hours, currently
Mike is building one has 320 hours into it and is ready for paint.
This is the first time the Mike has ever built a
plane and he feels that a person with average knowledge and
experience should have no problem completing the kit in 500 hours.
Mike has about 150 hours on "OZI" his two place
trainer, which is powered by the four cylinder 80 horsepower Jabiru
engine which produces about 145 foot lbs. of torque.
The engine weighs in at 132 lbs. total. Fuel burn
is approximately 2.5 gallons per hour and cruise is a 100 mph. The
six cylinder version is 165 lbs. and puts out 120 hp.
The control system is standard stick and rudder
with dual rudder pedals and a center mounted stick, and large flaps
for short field take offs and landings.
When powered by the six cylinder engine the Calypso
takes off in about 250 feet. Cruises in the 130 mph range, using
about 5 gallons of fuel per hour with a standard fuel tank of 16.5
gallons. "With the six cylinder engine the Calypso makes a great
float plane."
The wide roomy 42 inch cabin is fully enclosed and
quiet, making for comfortable 400 mile trips. Maintenance is a simple
as changing the spark plugs and oil.
A number of flight schools are using the Calypso in
a training environment in Australia and Europe, and their are over
600 aircraft world wide. |
