Flight Designs CTLS on Claymar amphibious floats

Since the introduction of the Lighsport Aircraft category the CT by Flight Designs has led the way in performance and sales.

When you think of a sleek high performance aircraft, basically limited to 100 HP, you generally do not think of it being equipped with floats.

I would liken it to hooking a camping trailer to Mercedes Benz 450SEL!

But at Airventure 2010 Flight Designs distributor Tom Gutmann Jr. unveiled the first CTLS equipped with Claymar amphibious floats. To accommodate the floats the gross weight on the CTLS has been increased to 1420 lbs.

The float retract system is electrically operated with all four wheels retracting at the same time. Tom reports that the floats have been tested landing on water with the gear down successfully, as well as landing with the gear up on a grass surface.

Ground steering is accomplished via differential braking on the main gear, and castering nosewheels, while water steering is via a water rudder attached to the rudder pedals.

According to Tom one of the reasons for introducing a float system for the CTLS is because of the number customers who own CT's who want to go on floats. Thus the system has been designed to be retrofittable to production aircraft, with the addition of dual brakes and some minor firewall modifications.

Tom reports a slight performance loss, with the plane's cruise coming in at around 100 to 105 knots.

Currently the float installation is being offered as a turn key operation, from Gutmann's location in Tulsa Oklahoma. A customer drops his or here plane off and come back a week later to pick it up. If the customer does not have a float plane rating training will also be available.
