The Sparrow 11 is a 510-1b, side-by-side, high-wing
airplane that seems to offer a lot of flying for your
dollar. With a gross weight of 1050 lbs and a 65-hp
Rotax 582 power plant, the Dacron and aluminum-tube Sparrow
II will take off in an observed 200 to 300', climb at 1000
fpm, and pull you through the air at a 95-mph cruise. The
bird has an advertised stall speed of 36 mph.The tri-gear
craft stands 7.7' tall, is 18' long, and has a wingspan of
31.2' with a wing area of 140 sq ft. The bird carries 10 gal
of fuel. |

Overall control is docile, the
stability profile is a little soft but not too bad by
homebuilt standards (will need some work if this aircraft is
presented for VLA certification)?the aircraft is not
unpleasant in a lot of ways. A little fine-tuning could
really turn this into a good little airplane. All models
come with lots of plexiglass for a tremendous view of the
ground and aircraft sharing the skies with you.
The kits came several different ways: complete basic
kits, without instruments or engine and prop; partially
assembled kits; or kits in portions?the fuselage kit is
first, then the wing kit, followed
by the power plant, and finishing kit.
I rather like the looks of the Sparrow II XTC, but since
the company won't let us near it for a flight report, we
have little true idea of what the 100-hp Continental engine
can do for it. Personally, I think this may be just what the
doctor ordered for this bird and I'd love to find out for
myself.
All-metal, the Sparrow II XTC is fabric covered, and a
number of kit options are available to ease purchasing and
building chores. A quoted 500-hour build time, 22-gal wing
tanks, landing lights, adjustable seats, skylights,
carpeting, and a host of other goodies could make the
Sparrow II XTC a sweet bird. |
