Three German men have successfully, designed, built and
flown the world's first electric powered multicopter. The
E-Volo is powered by 16 electric driven motors each driving
a small composite fixed pitch propeller.
In the first manned
flight of the E-Volo, which lasted 90 seconds, the craft was
piloted by Thomas Senkel. In the accompanying video and
pictures you can see Thomas seating in the center of the
E-Volo, controlling the craft via remote control handset.
The total weight of the craft empty is 80 kg. and it is
currently capable of between 20 and 30 minutes of flight. An
on board computer controls the engine speed for directional
stability and control. Future plans include and integrated
GPS system, folding arms for ease of storage and transport,
and a hybrid drive system to extend the E-Volo's range. |
