Kestrel Hawk
The tandem two-place Hawk is a biplane that has an unusually
modern look with the engine in a pusher configuration
resting on the airplane's fuselage between the top wings.
It offers features like dual flight and engine controls, four full-span ailerons, steerable
tail wheel, a ventilation system and a 12-volt electrical system.
It's also an
all-metal design, with the exception of the fibreglass cowling, and the aluminum
pieces are pre-cut pre-formed and jig drilled for fairly quick assembly time,
about 250 hours.

One of the nicest things about the Kestrel
Hawk is its enticing visibility. Couple that with a rugged fuselage, responsive
handling, dynamite looks, obedient though unconventional ground handling and a
90-plus mph cruise, and you have quite a winner. By the way, the Kestrel hawk is
exceptionally enjoyable to fly.
With one person aboard in front of the Rotax 582, the Hawk
can climb at 1,100 fpm after a 250-foot take-off roll. Top speed is 100 mph,
cruise is 94 mph, and stall is 38 mph. The wingspan is 24 feet 6 inches; length,
23 feet 9 inches; height 5 feet 6 inches. It is stressed for solo loads to +6
and -3 Gs. Puddlejumper floats were available as an option.
Design/Engineering: C+. A bit heavy...
Ground Handling: C+. Tandem gear is a mite weird...
Flight Characteristics: B. Nicely balanced, great visibility!
Kit/Plans: Came Ready to fly or in kit form 250 to 500 build time
"Bang For The Buck": B.
Final Grade: B-. An intriguing design with nice handling. |
