The Highlander, Carbon Cub, RANS S7, Savage i Cub, Legend Cub, and Aerotrek A220 at the 2010 Midwest LSA Expo

So we've gone through the show and looked at it from several different angles and points of view, but there is yet another we have to look at and that is the tail draggers! Love em or hate em these planes make up a great deal of the light sport aircraft market share.

The U.S. with all of its wide open space, and wilderness areas is the bush plane capital of the world. which probably explains why so many LSA manufacturers produce taildraggers!

Six different models of taildraggers were at the 2010 Midwest  LSA Expo these included the Just Aircraft Highlander, the Cub Crafters Carbon Cub, the RANS Aircraft S7, the Savage i Cub, the American Legend Cub, and the Aerotrek A220.

The Just Aircraft Highlander and the Aerotrek A220 are side by side seating aircraft, while the RANS S7, American Legend Cub, Savage i Cub,and Cub Crafters Carbon Cub are front and back or tandem seating aircraft. The Highlander, RANS S7, American Legend Cub, and Cub Crafters Carbon Cub are built in the U.S. while the Aerotrek A220 and Savage i Cub are imported.

Five of the six feature standard dual three axis controls with flaps, the Aerotrek  uses what are called "flaperons. The Highlander and Aerotrek 220 also have the ability to fold their wings for storage.

Five of the six aircraft use the Rotax 912 ULS 100 HP aircraft engine as standard power. While the Carbon Cub uses a specially designed and developed ECI Stroker 340 engine with electronic ignition, with a light weight alternator and flywheel, this engine can put out up to 180 horsepower for 5 minutes. This power and the use of carbon materials to keep the weight down gives this plane performance that has to be seen to be believed. BUT at a cost.

The RANS S7 probably has the largest market share as it has been produced since the mid 80's, and was available as a two place ultralight trainer under the old training exemption, and an amateur built experimental aircraft kit.

All six aircraft are "tube and fabric" style aircraft using a welded 4130 chromoly steel fuselage, covered in standard aircraft fabric covering materials. Two aircraft the Just Aircraft Highlander and RANS S7 can be built as experimental amateur built aircraft, which could make them eligible as ELSA aircraft.

The Savage i Cub has the unique feature of being supplied with an i Pad glass panel giving pilots access to GPS navigation, an artificial horizon, airspeed indicator, compass, altimeter, and updated weather information.
