Cute and cheap is a deadly combination, to your wallet, that
is. That just might be what the folks at Theis aviation had
in mind when they debuted Speedster biplane at Sun N Fun
1996.
40 HP Kawasaki powered, the Speedster is a cute little
rascal reminiscent of the Chester Jeep or Atwood
special. While a different version called the Sportster was
styled more conventionally.
Both come in at just under 254 pounds, have at top speed of
60 mph, cruise at 56 mph, stall at 28 mph, and climb at 750
ft./m. The kits are composed of wood, composite, and
metallic components, and are pre-jigged and cut for
assembly. |

The 13'1" long Speedster
stands just 4'8" high and has a wing span of 17'5". The wing
area is 77.5 ft.?. The fuel capacity is 5 gallons, which
should be enough to offer a 125 mile
range. The speedster has a gross weight of 475 pounds and an
empty weight of 250 pounds, leaving nearly 200 pounds for
the pilot after gassing up. Takeoff requirements are 150
feet and landing should take only 200 feet.
The kits did not include engine, prop, we'll pants, spinner,
or instruments. But did include pre-shaped foam components
precut aluminum tubing, preformed nose cowl, pre-molded
wingtips, wheels, tires, windshield, fabric, hinges,
fasteners, and plans.
Options included special fairings, wheel pants, and spinner. |
