CTLE light sport aircraft, law enforcement lightsport, from Flight Design.

It seems if there is something new to be introduced for light sport aircraft applications, the company the is first out of the box is Flight Design.

This year at the U.S. Sport Aviation Expo they again had a first. Roger Crow of Echo Flight USA had on display and was demonstrating the CTLE. The CTLE is a special version of the CTLS which has been equipped to act as an aerial surveillance platform for law enforcement.

According to Roger the plane is a standard CTLE is equipped with an EOIR camera system. This system can be used during the day or at night. At night the camera uses a heat source imaging system, which can be used to pick out someone lost in a forest or hiding from police in a backyard.

Roger a former Air National Guard pilot and law enforcement officer, started the research and development of the system about two years ago. His extensive search lead him to the Flight Design CTLS. He found that he could mount

his camera pod out on the wing without having to make any modifications to the plane itself. He also found that even with the 17 lbs. pod hanging out on the wing the plane flew just the same as if it wasn't there!

The system is operated via a controller very similar to that of used on game consuls. As a pilot flies the plane, a second person operates the camera, which can be locked on a specific target as the CTLE circles at about the same speed that a helicopter would, in the same situation.

The operator has a separate screen which he uses to track and adjust the camera. Currently the data collected is stored in a computer on board the aircraft, but in the future it is expected that the information will be down linked directly from the craft to base.

The CTLE will be available by government agencies for "Public Use." Under this heading the weight can be increase to 1500 lbs which allows for the extra equipment is equipped with. For Roger's purposes he has reduced the fuel storage to 15 gallons from 30.

The CTLE completely equipped at the show would sell for approximately $250,000.00. While a Cessna 182 would sell upwards of $500,000 just for the aircraft. Roger indicates the actual cost of hourly operations is about $25.00 to $38.00 per hour versus $500.00 to $600.00 per hour for a Jet Ranger helicopter.

Roger has found that because of the economics of today a great many cities and government agencies are taking a second look at what he has to offer.
